Extreme Veteran 1222 Tallahassee, Florida | Subject: Volunteer - Pay It Forward How about a different kind of challenge? We are all training and many are racing but so far, I haven't seen some place where we can set some goals to help all of the Race Directors who are busting their tails to put on good races for us. I've heard that some people set goals of volunteering for x races a year or for putting in x hours a year. Anybody interesting in setting some goals and then posting their volunteer hours? If so, respond in this thread and I'll set up a spreadsheet. |

Thanks for joining!!! Sure thing. It always feels good to work an event, cheering on the participants. It is also nice to be cheered on when you are participating, and if we don't all take a turn, who will? Hubby usually volunteers at the events that I am in. Keeps him busy while I'm out on the course. |

New user 29 Chanhassen | Subject: RE: Volunteer - Pay It Forward I'm late to the game, but just had to reply. Besides my own athletic events this year, I have two other goals... to donate blood 4 times, and to give 100 hours of service (about 20 more than last year). I volunteered at the Twin Cities Marathon this past Fall and it was great! I'm looking forward to working at some of the races I'm not participating in close to my house. "Not all who are Leaders will serve, but all who Serve are Leaders!" Happy January! Tonya |

"Not all who are Leaders will serve, but all who Serve are Leaders!" Happy January! Tonya Wow, that is what I like about this. I was thinking only about volunteering and then you mention another exceptionally worthy thing to do - blood donations! I just added it to my goal list too. I gave last week but now it makes me focused on scheduling further blood donations. Welcome abroad Dandy_girl! We are thrilled to have you. I added you to the spreadsheet as well as your goals. I wish you the best on all of your athletic events too. And if people don't want to update the spreadsheet, just feel free to post in this thread. I think it's nice to formally declare our goals because once someone else sees an idea, it sometimes makes them realize that they can do that or something else that would benefit others. Extreme Veteran 1222 Tallahassee, Florida | Subject: RE: Volunteer - Pay It Forward First race volunteering stint in yesterday. Was hoping that I could have helped with packet stuffing too but it fell on the same night of son's baseball dinner so I was volunteering at it. But yesterday worked packet pickup for Tally marathon and half. Busy, hectic, fun. |

Details please. They are a series of 5K fun runs and about every kilometer there is a color station (mine was obviously pink) where the runners run through and are colored up by graffiti crews. The color is a tinted corn starch based substance so its not toxic (still doesn't taste good) and environmentally friendly. The races aren't timed so its all just for the experience. http://www.thegraffitirun.com/ are just a few. Whole family is running next year.
Also on a related note. Volunteering at race #2 for 2013. Body marking/bike inspection at the Calaveras duathlon this weekend. Edited by dsand97 2013-02-12 2:57 PM |

I found out that there is a color run this weekend about 100 miles from me. Would love to do it but son has a high school baseball game so I've got to pass. What a cool idea! Glad you had fun and the whole family is doing. Have fun this weekend at body marking! We always have a deal that the guys get to body mark the women and the girls get to body mark the men. Makes it more fun that way. |

Extreme Veteran 1332 | Subject: RE: Volunteer - Pay It Forward Glad to see this. While I probably won't log my volunteer stuff, I'll be helping out with the weekly time trials this year as well as with some other events. Probably some cyclocross too. Our shop has a pretty a pretty casual rider guidelines, ride according to the rules of the road, be courteous, we wear the shop colours, get a discount, volunteer a bit. Works out pretty well. |

Extreme Veteran 1222 Tallahassee, Florida | Subject: RE: Volunteer - Pay It Forward You are all doing so good with your race volunteering!!!!! I've got to get busy. Son's baseball is overdrive right now and we have our volunteering at the games so I haven't been able to pick up any races lately. Soon tho. Our church had the blood mobile today so I gave blood. Then I went to church and was in time for communion where I passed out! Not the hit-the-floor kind (cuz son grabbed me) but more the kind where I looked like a drunk at the communion altar. Hubby and son got me out of there. |
