Subject: Saturday Tempe Ride

We are going to do a ride on Saturday (9/13) out of Tempe.  We will be heading from Tempe up 87 towards payson.  The proposed turn around is Shea Blvd.  This is a good stretch of road, big shoulders to ride on.  I think this is actually part of the IM route.

Anyway, I am thinking a 5:30am start time will be good.  Probably all meet at Tempe town lake.  Any takers?

So far it's me and Ox.

I am ok with 6am.  I would like to try 2 loops, but probably 1.5 would be more realistic.  I want to get a long ride in though.  I want to be ready for Nathans.  Since I had a disasterous day at Anthem, I want to rock it at Nathans.

Okay, since we negotiated I am in.  LOL  I want to try to get to 60 miles though but we can see where it goes that day.   If 6 works that is even better because I am coming from the boondocks and it will take me 30 or so to get there.  Thanks bro, see you Saturday!!

I think that I might be more inclined to do a 6 am ride.

If I recall most of the outbound leg is a gradual uphill since you are heading to Payson right?

Are there any gas stations along the way to get water if I run out?

Once we actually get on 87, your in it for the long haul.  There is nothing until we get back.  It is a gradual uphill, but well worth it.  The turn around has some killer speeds.  I am planning on having water, gatorade, and maybe even where my camelpack.

OK if you go to the Ironman AZ web site you can see a map of the course. We will meet at the Main parking lot at Tempe Town Lake. The ride starts at 6 sharp.

The last gas station to fill up is at the intersection of Mcdowell and the B-line. There isn't another gas station on the route.

But if you turn left at Shea and go up 1/4 mile you will hit two more gas stations. But that is off the route.

The first 7 miles is a mild up hill. Kinda flat.
After we make the turn onto the B-line it is up hill almost all the way to Shea. Aprox 13miles
at the Turn around it can get fast. All the way back to Tempe is smooth sailing.
It gets Hot fast.
It gets lonely if you are not in a group.

I think that it is the best route they could have chossen for the IM loop. It is a true test of an Athlete.

So if you are up for a good ride that will make you feel like you earned your time in the saddle then come. Ihave been crazy enough to do this a couple times.

Don't worry Java.  I did this ride when I first started training.  I was about at my end and maybe even past it.  I have made leeps of improvements since then.  You will be fine.  This not a Pecos hill or lake pleasant hills.  This is just a gradual hill and even flattens out a few  times for a nice rest.  Trust me, I did this months ago when I was even worse of a rider.

There isn't anyone in this group that would have a prob going the distance. Just bring enough water and Fuel. It is a long time between stops. That is the best part of it there isn't a bunch of stop signs when you get out on 87.

Is there a spot to turn around if we do about 1 and a half?  My goal was 60 for this weekend.

Java - The course climbs 500 feet over 20 miles, by most peoples descriptions its uber gradual you've climbed a HECK of alot more than that in less mileage. (For example Usery alone is nearly 700 ft of climbing in 3-4 miles). If there is wind, thats what will get you there, not the incline.

I love this website, its fun! Makes Lake Placid and Canada look like a BEAST!!!

Josh and I may make an appearance...don't hold your breath. But would be fun.
