Hey BT,

Quick question regarding tapering.  I will be competing in my first triathlon in 11 days and was wondering when I should start tapering if at all.  This is only a Sprint and the distances are not significant (.33M swim, 15 bike, 3.3 run).  Even though this is my first triathlon, I've been cross training for the past 3 years pretty religiously (run, bike, & strength training) and feel that I am at a pretty good fitness level.  I also monitor my nutrition and listen to what my body tells me with respects to over training.

So my question to is, is tapering really necessary for a Sprint, given my relative fitness level?  Being a triathlon virgin my plan was to shut the training down 3 days out from the event.  Is this sufficient?

Love to have some feedback....

I would taper 2-3 days if you want to be at your prime for a sprint or Oly, a couple days more for an HIM, and a week for an IM.

I'll back that up for a sprint...    2-3 days of easy recovery.  If it's an important race, I take a day off 2 days prior to the race and then just a warm up run/ride (w/ a few pick ups) the day before.
