Subject: Bike Advice

Hi there,

I am fairly new to triathlons, and am currently riding a Trek 1000 road bike, which I understand is an entry level bike. A friend of mine is selling his road bike for $800 - it is a Steelman frame, and the cost of the whole bike was in the region of $3,200 (though it is a few years old, but well looked after, as I know he hasn't ridden it that much). The frame is roughly the right size for me, and I took it out for a ride and it felt pretty comfortable. It also felt smoother to ride than my Trek.

I've no idea how much quicker the Steelman bike would be than my existing one. I'd happily shell out the $800 if it would be save me significant time on the bike leg, but I just don't know enough about bikes.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

 Tony.

What are the components on the bike? Can you take it to a bike shop and have it fit to you to make sure it's the right size? What year is it? How much does it weigh? Do extras come with it?

Welcome to BT!

No bike is going to make anyone significantly faster on the bike leg, especially considering you already have a road bike unless they are going from a mountain or hybrid to a road or tri bike, nd that is just oure physics of rolling resistance that accounts for that.

Of course position and fit are key to being able to ride long distances and time, so that should be your key buying point.  If he'll let you take it to a shop to look it over and evaluate it, that would be the most beneficial thing you could do.

But again, it is not going to make you any faster (unless it motivates you to get out and ride even more).
