Subject: Garmin Bike magnet- universal magnet okay?

I was wondering if I need to purchase the bike magnet specifically?  I've gone through 2 of them in just 2 years.  Is that normal?  It is hard to mount to my bladed spokes.  Can one use any magnet, like the cateye one?
