I'm in my 4th season dong triathlons -- I've done a handful of sprints -- and will be doing my 1st Olympic length race this fall.  I have an inexpensive road bike with very unreliable components that I've attached aero bars to.  I am shopping for a new bike under $2,000.  Most of my road riding is tri-training, although some friends are trying to convince me to do a century ride.

Should I go for a road bike or a tri-bike?  What really are the pros and cons?  Does a tri-bike make for an easier T2 as some have suggested (easier for the legs to adjust to run)?  Any insights are greatly appreciated.

The easier T2/legs-to-adjust-to-run is a myth, there is little evidence that a tri bike helps in this regard.

What a tri bike doess let you better balance aerodynamics. comfort and power in your position.

As to your question, if all of your cycling needs can be met with a tri bike, then that's what you should get. I'm a proponent of having both (actually two of each), but there's bvery little I couldn't do with just a tri bike. And that includes riding a century with friends. It does preclude riding a century in a pace line with friends, though.

I am new to Tris and cycling, I have always enjoyed cycling but I did not have the right bike to do it. I use to ride around and train on a GT Outpost. I was having debates with myself about getting a tri bike or a road bike. I finally decided that I love cycling, I might as well get a great bike for cycling and get it fitted for aero position, thinking if I don't like doing triathlons(hard to say that, but it could be possible, unlikely after all this training, I can not wait to do more) I could use the bike for cycling.

I picked up a Trek 2.3 and all the necessities for about 2100$ last Friday. My first tri is this Sunday. LOL. I figure if I get really into this, I will get a Tri bike in a couple years.
