Subject: First ride on my new tri bike...

Have been using a borrowed hybrid bike this year...did two sprints and enjoyed it...so I finally got me a tri bike!

Rode it for the first time today...so everything is VERY new to me...working to get a good fit, pedals, shoes, aero-position etc...but here are a few things I noticed today and I wanted to get some input...

1.  I have a 10 mile route that I do a few times a week on my lunch break...very soon into the route I noticed that the muscles right over my knee caps were getting very sore...this wasn't happening before.

2.  I was pretty comfortable...but I did notice myself getting out of the aero position when I was going up a slight incline...it seemed like whenever I felt the need for a little more power, I would automatically go back up to my "normal" position and would drop back down when it was flat or downhill.

3.  I did go from averaging 15.5 to 16 mph...to 17.5 mph!

So, are these things normal differences that everyone notices?

Thanks!

I got a pretty good fit on my tri bike so I never experienced knee pain, but on my road bike, knee pain in the front translated to a saddle that was too low.  Dont know if thats your problem.

As for staying in the aero position, the only time I come out of it is if I need a rest, if I'm going up a steep hill/incline, if I'm going down a steep downhill (I need to work on this), or if I'm making a sharp turn.  On slight inclines, I feel I have more power in the aero position.....again, this may have to do with your fit.

im in the same boat as you.  that is, trying to get used to the feel of a tri bike.  im with you on getting off the aero bars for hills.  i feel like i do it for a couple reasons..one being it's just more comfortable right now when exerting extra energy, and secondly i feel like my legs aren't strong enough to push that hard w/out some upper body movement/shifting to help compensate.  i'm sure that is all wrong as far as proper technique is concerned, but sounds like you may feel the same way.
