Subject: Wetsuit Question
Hi,

I am not in a position to buy a "real" Triathlon wetsuit, but need every advantage in the water that I can get.  I can get a "Jet Ski" style wetsuit for around $30 (Sea-Doo).  I know this wouldn't be the best choice, but would I be hurting myself be using this style of wetsuit (would it be better than no wetsuit at all)?

The suit has short legs and short arms, and, if I remember correctly, is 3mm-thick neoprene.

All feedback and suggestions are welcome.  Thanks!

I would be concerned about the flexability in the shoulder area. Most wetsuits designed for triathlons/swimming are constructed with thicker more bouyant material in non-motion critical area like the chest and thighs (3-5mm) while utilizing thinner more flexable material in the shoulder area (1.5mm). It can hinder your swimming ability and increase fatigue if you are having to fight less flexable material. I have never swam long distance in a non-tri wetsuit so my comments are based more on speculation than real life experience.

I have a shorty and I find it difficult to swim in for distance.  Yes I can swim to my surfboard or the boat, but long distance is hard.  Not enough flexibility in the shoulders for repeated use. I went wetsuitless for my first over using the shorty FWIW.

You can rent a wet suit from f2r.com for $45 for 28 days ($105 deposit + shipping too)  I did that for my second tri.
