In T1 looking for my Schwinn Huffy
Subject: Ready for Half Iron?
I'm preparing for my first Oly tri in 3 weeks.  I feel good about my training so far and am really looking forward to it.  Question: I'm bouncing back and forth on entering the Longhorn Half Ironman at end of October.  Part of me worries it's premature since I started tri training in February of this year....but I have gradually moved up the training this year, and feel like there's just enough weeks left to taper before the Oly and dovetail into half-ironman training for the last 6-7 weeks.

Would appreciate any review of my logs to see if you think a half-ironman is premature ...I'm normally pretty good about being patient, but it's just that I've had a good summer of training and feel like I may be in a good position to try this (and I turn 43 in October so was kind of hoping to make this a birthday thing)....as some more background, I swam on a team for 6-7 years growing up (so feel very comfortable in the water) and have done 8-9 half marathons (+1 marathon) over past 10 years.  My least amount of experience is on the bike...right now, I'm doing 3-4x week of spinning + 1 ride on weekends (at around 40 miles on weekend ride now), and frankly it's my favorite of the three sports now!  Only semi-concern is a sore shoulder on swimming but it's improving.  I just downloaded the BT "Olympic to Half-Ironman" bridge training to see if I can tailor a bit to fit it into the next 10-11 weeks.

If I don't try the Longhorn, I'm already signed up for the New Orleans half-ironman in April.

Thanks for any advice.

It sounds like you have a really good running/ swimming background, but this concerns me

I'm doing 3-4x week of spinning

is this spinning like spin class or are you out riding ? (or riding your bike on a trainer)

It's a little of both...I'll typically do 2x in a class (1 hour each) and then 1-2x on my own...I don't have a trainer so do the 'solo' rides on the stationary fixed gear bike and track it by HRM zones.  You hit on my biggest concern as well...I feel good about my bike conditioning but this is the newest of the three sports to me and I want to make sure I give it due respect (so it doesn't eat my lunch in a race)
