Subject: Training cassette

Have been training and racing the past years on 12-25. Raced this weekend on 12-23. No problems with 12-23. Should I save the 12-23 for race only and train on the 12-25? I know the 12-25 might be race cassette based on course, but if the 12-23 becomes my go to cassette, should I save it or train on it? I'm usually in the middle of the cassette (except for those down hill blasts.)

Shouldn't make a bit of difference to someone who is "usually in the middle of the cassette." The 12-25 just starts its 2-tooth jump one gear sooner. Personally, I train and race on the 12-23 as there are no hills around here which would necessitate the 25 (or the 11, for that matter).

12-23  (12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,21,23)
12-25  (12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,25)

I would say you should train on the same cassette you race with. Now if you think the 12-23 gives you all the gear you need ride with it. If however you have hills where you use the 25 in training you may want that free wheel come race day. I once rode a 7 mile climb with an avg grade if 11-13% with an 11-21 believe me nothing hurts more than needing one more cog(or 3 more) and not having it.
