Subject: Garmin 310xt Import Issue

Hi - I recently switched from a Garmin Forerunner 305 to the 310xt.  I noticed that when uploading my runs that for the heart rate info where it shows how long you are in each zone that the time in the zones does not add up to the total time that I ran.  So for example, today I ran for 2:43 but if you add up all the time in my heart rate zones it only equals 2:22.  I then went back and looked at other runs and the heart rate data is not adding up to the total time running.  Any ideas why this is happening?

Sounds to me like its only recording "zone" thresholds time.  For example, your run today was 2:43, but you spent only 2:22 in your actual zone settings.  Thus, 0.21 in a "no zone" setting.  I would try to adjust my zones just to see if this is the issue.  Just a thought.

There could be a number of reasons for this.
  • Any time spent under zone 1 (in your case that a bpm of < 126) won't be recorded.
  • With the 310xt as the total time with the 310 includes any time the watch is paused. This is apparently different than with the 305. HR data is not captured during this time.
  • Also, due to the way the HR data is recorded under the hood, the Total Workout time and total time in zones will almost never match. There are any number of ways to calculate the time spent in each zone, each of which will yield a somewhat different result. This is evidenced by the fact that Garmin's own software products can produce different "Time in Zone" values from each other.
