Pre-race routine:

These races start a little after 6:30 pm. I drank coffee in the afternoon and stopped at McDonald's for an apple, grape & yogurt plate around 5:00 on my way home from a conference. That light meal sat pretty well with me.

Drove half an hour out of my way trying to find this place, stopping for directions twice before I finally figured it out. Arrived in work clothes and had to change in the porta-john.
Event warmup:

Changing in the porta-john served as my warm-up!

Comments:

I wore my heart rate monitor and tried to keep it around 180. I stopped to walk pretty much every time it got into the 183-184 range. I walked up both hills and occasionally at other times. I knew I wasn't ready to run 5K in 90 degree heat without walking and the HR monitor gave me permission to keep it real.

Sadly, my right hip started hurting me in the third mile and it's been sore the rest of the night. I iced it for an hour or so and now I'm heading to an epson salt bath.

Event comments:

This is what a fun run ought to be! I'll do this run again through-out the summer, these races are every Tuesday at 6:30 pm.

Performance:
Course: This is a gorgeous cross country course. It was mostly hard-packed dirt, but some packed sand and some less packed dirt and/or gravel. It was scenic, cool, often shady and just plain fun to run. They ask you when you check in what you predict your time will be, and they award prizes for people who came closest. I predicted 36 minutes and was 18 seconds faster than I guessed.

Gwen,

Way to go!  I raced a 5k on Sunday in 90 degree heat and it wasn't fun- I found it really hard to pace myself.  I'm jealous that you have access to racing a 5k every week- it will be fun to see what happens to your time over the summer.

Yeah, I read your race report.  This one had the advantage of being cross country rather than a road race so it's in the shade and goes along a babbling stream for a ways - that makes it cooler.

But here it is the next day and my right hip still isn't right and I'm thinking maybe racing again next week isn't good for my long-term training goals!
