Pre-race routine:

This was try-a-try. Had no idea what I was doing. Sort of Walked around trying to figure out how to get my bike in the transition area. Then I asked around on how to put on my bib. Then fished around to find out where to get numbered. Then where the start of the swim was and what the course was. All in all pretty nerve racking.
Event warmup:

Too unerved.
Swim
  • 06m 13s
  • 200 meters
  • 03m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

Got to get in more swim practice outdoors.
Transition 1
  • 04m
Comments:

I did not have a bib belt (did not know about bib belts, no one mentioned this). Someone suggested I pin the bib on my bike jersey and put in on after the swim. Not that great an idea. When I tried to put on my jersey, I was wet, the jersey rolled up around my shoulders. I couldn’t get it on or off. I was stuck for about 3 minutes. Did not know what to do I tugged and pulled and managed to tear the bib. Finally got it off and started over making sure it did not roll-up. For the bike shoes I figured that I did not need to lace them for such a short ride. I would only tighten the Velcro straps. Only the laces got stuck inside my shoe and when I started to run off I realized I had to start over to get the lace back on top.
Got to get organized.

Bike
  • 28m 48s
  • 10 kms
  • 20.83 km/hr
Comments:

The novice came out again, my bike gloves where inside out.
The swim killed me I just couldn’t get into a good pace. No aero bars did a number on me. I had planed to un-Velcro my shoes and leave the shoes on the pedals. Only I started to un-Velcro too late. Only got one shoe done. So I had to unclip then run in the transition with one shoe flopping...

What would you do differently?:

No gloves, aero bar and practice the dismount.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

My ineptitude continued. I knocked 4 bikes over trying to rack mine. One was racked by the rear of the seat and just would not stay on (a weird mountain bike seat). The rest of the transition was ok.
Run
  • 18m 12s
  • 2.5 kms
  • 07m 17s  min/km
Post race
Warm down:

Did I mention that this was as extraordinarily hot day? Well I was totally dehydrated and guess what, the race organizers had not anticipated this warm a day and ran out of water. I had to go to the Red Cross tent. Thank God one of the girls their gave me a bottle of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of pre-race preparation and the heat.

Event comments:

As a novice it’s hard for me to rate this race. However, as a novice I was hopping that I would receive some orientation before the race.

Got bumped arround in the watter, shoved to one side then the other. And there where only women in the try-a-try groop. Still made it out not too bruised although I found the distance (200 m.) longer than I had imagined.

Hey JP - congratulations on your first tri!! It is great that you went out and learned many tri tricks the hard way, while still seeing it through.

If you are not yet smiling at it at what you termed your "ineptitude", you will be soon... is it not amazing how quickly we learn from trial and error?? Just think what a good story it is - I especially like the part about the domino effect on the bikes while you were racking yours!

And the good news is that now that you've gotten all the mistakes done in your first tri, your second tri will be a lot easier going.  We all make some slight mistakes on our first ... :-)
