Overall Rank = 1/36
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/4
Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep much, too much anxiety. The start was delayed by over an hour, so it was tough to stay focussed. Stretched/yoga. Bathroom at least 7 times as per the handbook!
Event warmup:

No warmup allowed, so I found out at the race. I biked a few kms to the event, and stretched beforehand...
Swim
  • 08m 14s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

Went out too hard on the first 100...dangnammit! Passed the guy in front, and at least didn't get lapped by someone behind. Just dug deep to stop myself going to breaststroke to settle down.
What would you do differently?:

Stick to the race plan. Take it easy!
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Transition was a little awkward, but after catching my breath, got it all together.
What would you do differently?:

Tri-suit and a number belt. Getting into a bike shirt when wet was tough.
Bike
  • 36m 25s
  • 19 kms
  • 31.30 km/hr
Comments:

Went out hard to make up for the crappy swim, almost wiped out on the first turn doing about 50kmh! They'd cut it a little tight, and I had to do some serious feathering on the brakes to make it...the rest was awesome, just passing folks and getting into a rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Wasn't a bad ride...definitely work on cornering at speed! lol
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Pretty quick transition. Was head to head with this 19yo dude that I was battling with in the bike...he got a head start on the run and I was chafing at the bit to catch him
What would you do differently?:

Definitely move towards a faster lacing system, as I lost precious seconds with that
Run
  • 23m 8s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 38s  min/km
Comments:

Started with high cadence, shorter stride as I felt a side stitch coming on...GREAT, I said to myself...what a way to end it all...I refocussed my breathing, and passed the dude I was battling with on the bike. We high fived as I passed him on the return leg, felt good. Had enough left to scorch it into the finish - what a RUSH!!!
What would you do differently?:

Was a decent pace, just get some more miles under my belt. Lean more.
Post race
Warm down:

Fluids, stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't hydrate nearly enough. Bit dizzy at the end. Put the hammer down a little too hard too early and went anerobic...learnt from that.

Event comments:

The only concern I had was after the race was complete, there was a limited amount of folks left to cheer on the winners ceremony...of course I wanted some glory!! The bike transition area was totally unattended, and after the week before's attempted theft of my baby, I was pretty fired up that there was no security in place for some pretty expensive hardware there. Felt good getting medals in my first race though, can't really ask for more.
