Sunny
Total Time = 5h 26m 28s
Overall Rank = 93/301
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/37
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4, ate Clif bar, banana, and a Gatorade. Stayed in bed till 5, then got going. Got T1 area laid out, and stood in porta-potty lines until too late. Once I got out of the potty I had to run to get my wetsuit on, and hustle to the water.
Event warmup:

Swam a bit, fiddled with goggles until they stopped leaking. Swam a bit more, and start.
Swim
  • 34m 37s
  • 2310 yards
  • 01m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

With very low visibility I didn't even try to draft. There was a fair amount of bumping into each other for the first half. I drifted off course a couple of times, generally to the left.
What would you do differently?:

Need to give myself more time to get in, get relaxed, and warm up a bit. The leaking goggles were an unnecessary pre-race distraction - tightening them fixed it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

Wetsuit pullers before T1 helped! I had a bit of a hard time getting my feet into the shoes (pre-attached to the bike).
What would you do differently?:

I would swim with my shirt on. I had left it in T1 to keep it dry, worrying that I might be too cold on the bike, but the temp wasn't that cold.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 34s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.82 mile/hr
Comments:

My general pace was right below 20, but then there were lots of short dips below, which killed my average speed.
What would you do differently?:

I think I ingested too much for my stomach to handle - it got a little upset in the run.
2 bottles Accelerade
1 bottle Amino Vital (or Cytomax)
1.5 Aerodrinks of water
1.75 Clif Bars

The extra bottle of Amino Vital I hadn't planned on, but I was pretty thirsty. I think substituting a water with an electrolye pill would have been better. That's why I left the last bite of the Clif bar.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Had to wait a couple of seconds while they found my bag. Went into changing tent, sat on chair (nice), put on shoes and hat and off - put race number belt on while running.
What would you do differently?:

I came into the bike jump off point pretty hard - apparently a few people came in really hard, and they realized they needed to post a volunteer further out to let people know to slow down.
Run
  • 1h 48m 43s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Went pee at mile 3 or 4 (outhouse). By mile 7 my stomach didn't want anything put in it. I had carried two 7oz Accelerades, and maybe finished one and a half of them. So I switched to just water, and did ok. At earlier aid stations I typically drank a bit of water and dumped the rest on my head.

Round about mile ten was my only significant pace drop off (from a little over 8min/mile to more like 10-12. But starting with 11 things got better. Mile ten was a definite low point.
What would you do differently?:

Eat a bit less on the bike. Maybe go for a lighter drink on the run.

I didn't know real race time - and I think that hurt me. I was thinking I was on pace to do 5:40, but I was actually doing much better than that. If I had a better sense of where I was in the pacing, I think my spirits would have been higher.
Post race
Warm down:

Went right into the med-tent as a precaution. My BP was something like 102 over 50. Had a Cytomax, and lied with my feet up. After a while (5 min?) my BP was up to more like 110, and I was feeling ok. I wrapped my knee in some ice (it felt fine through the race), and went and did some stretching and eating.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need a better bike engine ;)

I got bored, especially in the middle 8 miles of the run.

As stated, knowing race time would have helped.

Some of the aid stations were misplaced (by a couple of miles) which caused some confusion.

Great race, great report. Way faster than me, you would have kicked my butt and i'm about 10 years younger

I plan on doing my first 1/2, the cali half in March down in SD. I was wondering if you can go into some more detail as to your race nuitrition plan. I saw some info that you provided like what you ate, but I was more interested in...

For the bike, did you have a set plan on when you would eat and/or drink? Did you get anything from the stations?

For the run, did you use a fuel belt or something similar, because you said you had 2 7 ounce bottles? Did you have any plan set up with taking the accelerade and/or water from the stations?

Sorry for the long delay - I'm not very active in the forums...

I'm also planning on going to San Diego in March - it'll be a good start to the season!

As for nutrition, I planned it out pretty specifically (and then didn't stick to it!). I have a spreadsheet that contains the fluid, sodium and carb count for each thing I plan on putting in my body, and then has targets for each phase of the race. So when I type in one 24oz bottle of accelerade, it bumps my carb count for the bike (and the race totals) up, along with the fluid and sodium counts.

Really cool- then reality sets in

I had planned on 2 (24 oz) bottles of Accelerade, and my aero bottle of water, with one expected aid station refill of the aero bottle. I also planned on eating two cliff bars - specific flavors since each one is a bit different (some have more sodium, less carbs, etc.) I ended up getting the refill on the aero bottle, and I was thirsty enough that I tossed one of my empty Accel bottles and got an Amino Vital bottle (but I think it was actually cytomax).

That left me a bit over 'budget' on my carbs, so I didn't eat the last bite of my second cliff bar.

On the run, yes, I had a Fuel Belt race number holder with 2 seven oz bottles of accelerade, and planned on drinking water at every other aid station. I also carried a gell flask with basically 2-3 gels mixed with water.

As the run got to like 4 miles, my stomach was pretty ticked at me. I don't really know how to describe it. It just didn't want anything put in it. I think maybe what happened was that I really was over budget on carbs. So I tossed that last bit of bar, and slowed down on the Accelerade. I did have some of the gel, as I knew that I wasn't going to puke and that I would need the energy.

Around mile 10 I was pretty spent, but the people in the aid stations were really supportive. I switched to just drinking water, and tossing a cup of water on my head at each station.

Because I have very low blood pressure, I went right into the med station after the finish, and first off they weighed me - I had only lost half a pound! So I think I ended up just about right.

I hope that helps. Have a great winter, and we'll see you in March!

Mike
