Swim
Comments: Two left turns, that is all I needed to do and I'm a left side breather! No contact, middle of my pack, 40 or so in my wave. I swam zig zag to the first buoy, had to back track, then was winded and kind of limped to the next buoy before coming to the beach. Not sure why, maybe only one ocean swim in training. Results say 12.22 but that I think I was at 10 or so, and I don't have a T1 time so I'm guessing that the two times are combined?? Anyway, crappy swim, not good for my mindset. What would you do differently?: More ocean swimming, maybe long sleeve wettie. Sight better too. Transition 1
Comments: Very short run to the TA and my rack, suit off while standing, guessing on the time; no one told us where the mount area was so I got into one pedal too early then had to get out. Also ran out of the TA without my helmet buckled. My DGF was right there tho so I was able to hand her my bike when the marshall said to buckle. She was a godsend. What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: It's beautiful course but dangerous and hard to manage. Fast riding was not an option as often times it wasn't safe to pass and there were many technical narrow turns to make. Fortunately I was in the front group so there was not too much traffic, esp. at the end of my ride. I finally broke free of a small group and hammered the last three miles by myself with no one behind or in front of me. Wish I had a TT bike as I left 3 + minutes out there. What would you do differently?: Get a TT bike, not drop my bottle of powerade on the road. Transition 2
Comments: Tough to come to a complete stop with my HR at 150+ n I had the shakes putting on my shoes. What would you do differently?: not sure, could have been 30 seconds faster but might have left that on the bike course. Run
Comments: My DGF and I ran the course on Sat so I knew what to expect, Got my legs under me in the first 500 at 8:00 then got into race pace just over 7. Basically during each lap you could see the runners in front of you 4 separate times so I was able to see the runners that i wanted to pass. I ran down at least 10 guys, inc. one who passed me on the bike a little too aggressively for my tastes. Again, with 500 to go I was alone, noone behind or in front of me so a cruized into the finish. Could have taken maybe 15 or 20 seconds off of my time. What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Felt nauseous had to sit down. TG for my DGF, so great to have her with me. Ate a half banana, some OJ, then a Dr. Pepper which tasted great. Dump my gear in the car and came back for the medal ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: Ocean training, sighting, road instead of TT bike. Event comments: Beautiful location, nice sized race, very friendly volunteers. The bike course was pretty dangerous, even w/o too many riders for the sprint. While the bike trail is beautiful, there should be more of the race on sidestreets as the technical and sharp turns make it really hard to navigate during a race. Happy to take home first in my AG but I did so with a modest performance, esp. in the water. Happy with my run, satisfied with the end of my bike, back to the drawing board on the swim. Did I mention that my DGF was there? Priceless, thank you darling, I love you!! Last updated: 2013-06-29 12:00 AM

This was supposed to be a training race for Nautica Malibu, but I felt like I was in decent shape to push it a little. I was up every hour on the hour to check the time then finally got up at 4:45 with my DGF. Coffee, banana, blueberries and a piece of lemon cake. At the beach by 5:40 plenty of parking. Got into the TA early, first bike in my rack, Hit the porta pot, very clean and smelled fine. Memo to self, do not put swimcap and googles in hoodie pocket b/c if either or both fall into that evil blue soup, I'm swimming without them.
Gorgeous morning, very glassy; I was in the second wave, with 5 minute gaps so not worried about contact from the group behind me. Water was kind of cold, maybe 65, and I did a few bursts before start time. A little GI discomfort had to be forgotten . . .
