There is a first step that you do after installation (or moving one bike to the other ). That involves spinning the cranks at 90rpm as you saw. They refer to this as "Setting install angles". This is a necessary step to get accurate power numbers.
When you change the batteries, it forces you to redo this step
Then, every session you can do a second type of calibration, also known as "zeroing", and you do this from your head unit. This is what you are seeing.
There is a way to re-initiate the "Setting install angles". I could try and find it. Removing and replacing the battery will do it as well. You can do it on the trainer if you want.
