Subject: training plans, converting minutes to mileage
I haven't been able to find if this has been discussed. I'm interested in using the 1/2 IM training plan, but since I'm a very slow runner and biker, I don't think training in minutes would get me to the distances I need to be. Does anyone know an approximate pace that the intermediate 1/2 IM training plan assumes for running and biking?

It doesn't assume any particular speed or level of ability, other than 1 - 3 years of recent experience in endurance training and the ability to consistently swim 40min, run 60min and bike 90min.

The effort required to run or bike a particular distance when training can be highly variable, depending on the terrain (hilly vs. flat), weather (hot vs. cold, windy vs. calm), person (weight, previous experience). So "run for 4 miles at an easy pace" is going to be a very different workout for a 3rd year triathlete than it is for someone just starting. These 2 people are going to have very different responses to the workout. "run for 40 minutes at an easy pace" however, is going to be more predictable. It can be adjusted for weather/ability/terrain and the outcome as it relates to fitness should be about the same for each athlete.

What's your background and current ability?

I haven't done a race since 2003, before that I had completed many sprints, and olympic distances for about 5 years. Usually I was toward the back of the pack, 20% of the pack behind me. Although I haven't raced, I have been running and biking off and on the past 3 years. Right now I am able to run 4 miles, can bike over an hour and can swim until the cows come home. I was hoping to slowly increase my distance over the next few weeks and start the 18 week program with a goal of a 1/2 IM in Aug., ideally in Sept. The problem is I am very slow, about a 11 min run pace and 12-14 mile per hour bike pace. That is why I ask the question about time vs. distance. I've seen many training plans in books and online which are time based. Someone as slow as I would not cover the distance needed to be ready if we used a minutes training method.
