Slowly but surely....I am getting there.

I'll see you there Tracy. Maybe you can meet my husband and daughter that day.

Are you guys both racing?  I might race or I might just volunteer and yell.  Still in the air.

I am racing and plan to be slow. Injury has delayed my training this summer, but I still plan to race.

I am looking forward to it.

Hey girl, I'm the Tracy you volunteered with at the Duke HIM.  We sat and chit chatted at the transition station after the swim.  If your leg is fitting is not giving you too much pain, why not go for it?  Think of it as a training run through for your half.  Are you already signed up?

Ya, we'll see.  I don't want to mess up my taper.  I'm not signed up, but I might be able to sneak in anyway if I ask really nicely.

I am getting there, but my times will be way slow due to limited time on the bike, in the pool and running. My neck injury really stole a lot of time. About 2 months of basic training. I am just getting back into the groove in the pool and have yet to run. The doc and PT said that is what will give me the most issue at this point...pain wise.

Tracy, I am the woman from down at Riverwood. We talked that morning before the race.

I rode the bike route today and let's just say, I hope what happened today does not happen on Sunday next week. Three flats, two of them, before I even left the parking lot.

Tracy, you did this last year, is the bike route the same or similar. I missed a turn today while riding it. At least I know where it is now, and won't miss it next week.

I'll be doing this as my first. Should be fun. I have no ambitions except finishing. I'm all the way in the back. Bringing a bunch of friends to cheer me across the finish. I fully expect to be last. Although I'm told it's usually a little kid. But I checked the finish times from last year, and given my pace in swim, bike and run, I could very well be the last finisher. So if any of you hang around until the end, I'd love to meet you.

I went to the 101 workshop on Sunday. I'm glad I went. Now at least I understand how it works and what to expect.

yes it looks like the course is the same.   A few pieces of advise about this course:

Don't stand around in your bathing suit freezing.  We line up for the swim and part of the line stands outside for a while.  If you have a buddy around, I advise leaving your sweat shirt or jacket on until you get inside the building and then passing it off

Lay out a towel to stand on at the transition station and drape the towel for your body over your bike.

There are a lot of speed bumps in the first part of the bike - if you are not comfortable about hugging the curb to go around them then you should take the bumps and go over them.  Do your arse a favor and stand up though

The run is slightly uphill going out, but that means it is DOWNHILL COMING BACK!!!

If you can, I would advise doing packet pickup on Saturday. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the transition area and at least drive the bike course.

I'll be wearing my BT tatoo on my shoulder and a white swim cap.  My bike is a TREK with pink tires and bar tape, very hard to miss.  Keep a look out for me!!  I'll post my race number on Saturday evening after packet pick-up.

I will post my number as well once I receive it as well. I don't plan to do any half-stepping. Once I get out of the pool, I am gone, with my jacket over top, depending on the temp.

I am really looking forward to it. I just need to pick up my hammer gels and I am set to go.

I will post my number too. I am really looking forward to meeting all of you. There are moments when I feel so completely out of place and out of my mind for doing this. Then there are moments when I am just absolutely giddy and so proud of myself for going for it. I have a feeling race morning, I am going to need all the support I can get. At least until I get started. After that, I think the wonder and excitement of it all will get me through.

This is one of the wildest things I've ever done. yay me!

If you have any questions, pre-race, feel free to ask. If I remember correctly, this is your first...Yes??

This is my second, and I know Tahrens has done a couple. My piece of advice is stay outside of the pool until it gets close to your time to swim, the excitement can be very palpable pre-race. I went to watch my first in April or May, where I met Tahrens and I was ready to jump in the pool clothes and all. It was bad.

LOL - I am nervous and excited already. I can only imagine race morning!

I am concerned about the cold and staying warm. Before and after the swim. My toes tend to cramp when my feet get cold. Cramping the pool is no fun. Cramping on the bike isn't much better. So I guess that's my main concern right now.

That and being last...but I'm working on trying to get over that one but it keeps rearing it's ugly head. My plan is to get to know someone else in the back of the pack, then I won't feel so alone. I'd especially like to run alongside another slow runner. That would be really encouraging. I think for both of us.

But come what may, cold or no cold. I'm in! See you Sunday.

Considering I wasn't supposed to start, I would be happy to take a DFL.

My start is 9:09:10 race number 350

Looking forward to seeing you all there. Swim times are posted.

My swim time is 8:27:00 and my number is 139.    As far as cold feet go - do yourself the favor and take the time to put on socks during your first transition.  You are absolutely right that cold feet are a major drain during a race.

This is a 1 year anniversary race for me.  Last year this was my very first triathlon ever and since then I have done 2 sprints, 1 olympic, a 10 mile run and a 60 mile bike ride. It is amazing how addictive this sport is and how far you can go when you want to.

Hey!  This will be my first tri and I have to say I am a little nervous!  I've run a few 5ks a 10k and in the Kona marathon and my race day jitters can get way out of control!  I'm glad that you guys have posted some info about the course because I have not ridden it or run it.  My biggest worry....those hills!  And is it better to be at the front or the back of your swimming group?

Thanks!

Hi! I'm nervous too. It's my first too. But wow! you ran a marathon. you can definitely handle this. The run is nothing. And I am a really weak runner. But the run is a piece of cake. The bike course...well I haven't done the whole thing on the bike but i have driven it. from what i can see the hills are at the beginning.

can't answer your swim question. i have no idea what I'm doing on that front. But just wanted to reassure you that if you can do a marathon, this race will be a piece of cake for you. Wow! I hope to do a marathon one day. WOW! Nice to meet you.

By the way, the email I got yesterday said there will be some kind of walk through at packet pick up tomorrow. Seeing the course might make you feel better. But honestly, you will be fine.

As long as you posted an accurate swim time it doesn't matter.  There is one piece of pool swim etiquette, if the person behind you touches your foot/ankle repeatedly, that means they want to pass you. So when you reach the wall let them pass infront of you into the next lane.   It takes a lot of energy to pass someone when swimming so if you want to pass someone this is a better way to do it.  And don't freak out if people want to pass you.  Just swim your race and don't worry about the people around you.

Thanks for the post about how to pass in the pool. My swim time is way off. When I signed up I put down 20 minutes. I didn't know how to swim at all and thought I'd have to walk the pool. Anyway I took a few lessons and now I can actually, kinda sorta swim. The last time I did a 250, it was more like 11 minutes. Still slow for you experienced swimmers out there, but almost half of what I had estimated. But I missed the cutoff to change my swim time. So my options were to hang back or try to learn how to pass. Assuming the person(s) in front of me didn't make the same mistake I did.

Anyway, this is learning experience. If I get to pass someone great. If not, it doesn't matter. But at least now I know how. Tap their foot. Hmmm, come to think of it, that might not be so easy. I'm not the world's most coordinated person. But I'll see if I can figure out how to do that without totally messing up my stroke. Should be interesting...

I'm number 606 in order of start. Not sure if that's the same as my bib number. But if any of you are still hanging around when I finish, I'd love to meet you. My real name is Jennifer.

I was there but I had on a red jacket and black and red tights. Sorry I missed you. I'm just getting home and getting online now.

I did better than I thought I would. And I wasn't last. The swim was rough for me. Being so close to other swimmers freaked me out a bit. I swallowed a lot of water early on and couldn't fully recover. But I hung in there and just kept trying. I refused to just give up and walk. I'm proud of myself for that. I was one of the last to exit the pool but I gained ground on the bike and in the run. My transitions went a lot smoother than I thought they would too. I hadn't practiced much but I kept my gear to a minimum and that really helped speed things up. I finished somewhere around 90 mins of so, based on my friend's calculations. I really though it would be closer to two hours. I surprised myself with the bike. I didn't know the course at all but the ride was so pretty. Chapel Hill is beautiful.

The course was no where near as hard as I thought it would be. Despite my being on a 10-speed mountain bike. I wasn't fast compared to a lot of riders but much faster than I thought I'd be. I passed quite a few people and got myself back into a pack of riders on 54. I must have gained a lot of time. My friends were surprised at how quickly I got back. I told them an hour. It wasn't anywhere near that. I can only imagine how fast you can go on some of the tri bikes I saw. I might have to start saving up...

I really want to do another one. I know I can do better in the swim. I feel like I really lost it. But my instructor was watching and she said I didn't do as badly as I think I did. I just have to get used to swimming with a lot of other people. I'm going to continue with my private lessons and soon I'd like to join the Durham Masters Team. They swim several people to a lane and I think that would help.

Can't wait to see my times so I can post them in the log.

This really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. It was intimidating when I first arrived but I got over it. Now I understand what racing your own race means. That alone made this experience worth it.
