Subject: Cassette question

Ok i went to a LBS today and i was told that i had to buy a new cassette , so i do so, but i just notice that my bike originally had  11-23T and now the new cassette is 12/25, is there a big difference ? Also should i ask for the old cassette or not ?

I need to learn how to fix my bike , it's becoming really expensive.

They should have asked you which cassette range you wanted .......

The 12-25 will be 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25 (assuming you have a 10 speed).

The 11-23 will be 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23.

Your only real difference will be in the two "extremes" of the cassette.  With the 11 you get a bigger gear for descending and hard sprints.  With the 25 you get an "easier" gear for climbing.

If you are in a hilly area (and So Cal is) then the 25 may suit you better.  But if you have been climbing fine already with your old cassette, then you did not have to change it to a different range.

I'd say you will be fine with the new range and it may make climbing at a faster cadence possible.  No worries.

Why were you told that you "had" to buy a new cassette? Was there something physically wrong with the old one? And yes, I would say that you should have gotten the old one back. Even if there was something wrong, I'm sure some of the gears could have been reused in another combo. Weird.

First my bike was not shifting from the small ring to the big ring and when i would shift from cog to cog in the back it would take a good 30secs-1 min to switch. They said i need i tune up, so i did , also that i need a new chain which i bought it, so i went home and the shifting was a bit worst, so i take the bike back and the guy said he thought that could happen from using a new chain.

Again , i don't know anything about bike mechanics and the the guy in the shop has been a mechanic on the tour of California.
