Subject: Modify ( cutting ) a wetsuit

I purchased a used full wetsuit, BlueSeventy.  I find that that I'm much faster in the pool with it, about 6%, but I also find the arms very restricting.

I am thinking about cutting the arms off !!  Is this a big no no or have others done this.

That’s a big no-no. The then-armless suit would not seam properly around the arm holes potentially creating a lot of drag. Sell the full suit and buy a sleeveless wetsuit if that's what you want. If you are finding the arms too restrictive, you are probably not pulling the legs and arms up enough.

Agreed - either the fit is off on the suit, or you haven't donned the suit correctly.  There's a great article at bikesportmichigan about donning a wetsuit.

Plus a properly fitted wetsuit with sleeves is plain faster than a farmer john wetsuit.

And your full suit wasn't a farmer john that had sleeves put on to it.  The whole top half of the suit was assembled with the expectation that it would be meeting up with sleeves, so I suspect it would not fit right around the arm holes if you modified it.

Now if you want to remove an inch from the ankles, go for it!

Don't try to modify any part of the suit by cutting it. It feels restrictive at first but after a few times you get used to the sensation.
