When do you plan your massage?  I currently have 1 complete rest day and one stretch and strength day per week.  So when should I sked the massage.  I figure 1 per month right now would work.  I haven't needed them in the past but my mileage is getting higher and the legs start to feel it after a while.  Can you work out the next day??

Sax,
If you find the right massage therapist, you can work in the massage and stretching at the same time. Sports massage often times includes passive stretching and PNF.

Scheduling depends on your training schedule. Talk to your therapist about it.

Every therapist is going to be different.

That said, I have my athletes try and schedule deep tissue prior to a rest day.  Can you work out the next day? Sure.  However, iI think t is generally a better idea to let everything heal up.  A deep tissue massage may leave you pretty sore the next day and its better to rest through it.

Personally, I have prefered to get it done before a rest day but have also had them during training.  As was mentioned there are also less traumatic forms of therapy that are done right up to minutes before race time.

It all depend on what your goals are.  Your best bet is to find a good therapist, discuss your goals, and build it into your plan.

Definitely talk to your therapist. I tend to schedule mine as I feel sore. I called Saturday and went in. He said he couldn't do everything he needed in one session if I wanted to be able to work out again the next few days. He asked if I wanted it all done at once with a few days off or if I wanted to come back in a week to finish up and be able to work out the next day. I had a long run scheduled for Sunday so I went for the 2 sessions. A good therapist should work within your training plan and not put you completely out of commission for your harder workouts.
