Subject: Hours...

Hello all, I'm a runner trying to morph into a multisport athlete.  I trained for and ran a marathon and now have a Half-Ironman in my sites.

When I trained for the Marathon my goal wasn't miles but hours on my feet (wanted to run for 3 hours straight once before the race).

Does anyone follow that type of pattern rather than a set amount of miles to swim bike and run?  I've had a combined 3 hour bike/run session the other day, should I try to up that? (I'm looking to finish in the 6 and a half hour mark, I'm no speed demon).

Thanks all!

 ~Eli

I'm following the beginning IM plan from here and it's setup for time for bike and run and yards/time for swimming. I still feel more comfortable swimming X yards than Y minutes, but for bike and run I'm 100% time only.

More or less I go by time.  Swimming is most likely to be distance oriented (it seems kind of dumb to stop in the middle of the lane just because I hit exactly 30 minutes).  Running (which I hate) is most likely time oriented (I have no problem stopping a block early and walking).  But I also have an idea of distance I want to cover.  Sometimes I will use that to motivate a harder workout - e.g. if I swim sub-2 minutes/100 yards, I will stop "early" i.e. base it on distance more.

Since I love the bike, I will often pay no attention to the distance until I get home.

I have been a runner morphed to a triathlete.  As a runner I pretty much went by miles.  Then, what limited how much I ran was typically my body-you can only take so much.  Now that I am split among three sports it is available time that limits me, not my body, so I am more time oriented.  Where can I squeeze in time here and there?  As a consequence, I record both distances for the sports but my primary objective is total volume (aka time).  In the end I try to ratio the time training each sport similar to the relative time spent on the individual events in the race I am training for (and boost up my weakest sport a little relative to the rest).  Don't know if that makes sense but it is working for me at the present time.
