Subject: Swimming newbie questions

Tonight I decided to head to the pool to start swimming since my next year goal is to go from the duathlon world to the triathlon's one.

I was wondering how do you guys can calculate your times in the pool. I mean I know I swam 500 meters, but not too sure in how long since I took a couple of breaks etc.

Also, my longest swim without a break was 100 meters, is it kinda ok for a first timer in there? I mean I swim in my pool during the summer, but never did it to do longer than from one side to the other one of my pool :p

Thank you for any input you'll give me, reading this forum already helped me so much

As someone who grew up on swim teams, I still do everything in sets.  So I start out with a warm up of a slow but continuous 500m (when I started swimming after many years of getting out of shape I started with 200m and have worked my way up) Some people put a time on this I do not.  I then swim a set of either 10X50m or 10x100m on a time (I am currently doing each 50 on 1:50 and each hundred on 4:00, but this will change based on your speed)  This gives you built in rest times (ideally the time you allow yourself gives you :15 of rest or so) but forces you to be consistent in the time it takes you.  I then usually do 10X50 of some swimming or kick drills and a 200 cool down.  So its hard to give an exact time for a distance with this method, but you keep building your warm up and decreasing the time you get for each set of each distance.

Now if you could only teach me how to run Laughing

My first time in the pool earlier this year, I could not swim more than about 150 yards without hanging on the side of the pool and panting for a few minutes.  I swam 2800 yards straight in open water this morning.  Persistence will pay off.  Great start for you!  For me - it helped to have someone (a Master's swim coach) look at my form.

sounds like you are on track. good luck!

I estimate my *pace* as time per 100m by taking the total elapsed time and dividing by the total distance (in meters) and multiply by 100. but it doesn't mean much if it is not a continual swim. i figure out how many seconds it should take at a desired pace to do one lap (down and back) and then check the clock to see if i am close each lap.

Also, my longest swim without a break was 100 meters, is it kinda ok for a first timer in there? I mean I swim in my pool during the summer, but never did it to do longer than from one side to the other one of my pool :p

if you are considerate of the faster sharks around then there is nothing to worry about. just move to the side of the lane when you hang on the wall to catch your breathe. the only thing that is not okay is if you don't make it from one end to the other .

fwiw - three years ago i started swimming to prep for triathlon and i did this by alternating one lap freestyle (crawl) and one lap breaststroke. then i increased the number of laps i would freestyle prior to mixing in a breaststroke. this helped me to pace myself and not stop as much.
