Long story short, crashed on the bike back in early June two weeks out from IMCDA. Shoulder was quite tender as a result, but I wasn't going to (and didn't) let it stop me from completing my IM (dammit!). It has become progressively worse thruout the summer to the point where I cannot swim anymore. Finally went to the ortho yesterday and he is pretty sure I have a SLAP tear in my labrum and maybe a rotator cuff tear. I go in for an MRI (with contrast) next Tuesday.

Anyone out there ever done this to themselves? The doc says recovery is slow, but the prognosis is good. Anxious to hear some first-hand accounts.....

Yup, traumatic dislocation the day after Ironman LP in 2007 followed by Surgery in December of 2007. (Bankart and SLAP repair) I had torn my labrum 220 degrees around but my rotator cuff was undamaged.

Surgery was in December, I was running again after 2 weeks off, doing PT at 4 weeks, and swimming by mid-February. I did an HIM (With the Doc and PT's approval) the end of March and a full Ironman in June.

Recovery was quicker than the doc(s) had expected and I have had no problems since

Drop me a PM if you have any questions but I would say the Surgery is a very good thing. (At least for me it was) Just be sure to ask questions and share your race goals and plans with the ortho and the PT to make sure it is realistic. (And also ask when you can start training again)
