Subject: How do we feel about bike on a roof rack for long drives?
Heading to the Outer Banks of NC for the family beach vacation next weekend.  Last summer I threw my bike on the roof rack and drove the 15 hours from Indy to the beach (along with 3 kids and about a half ton of beach gear in the mini-van).  I was able to keep up the training and had some really great rides.  This year though I just plunked down the cash for a new carbon fiber road bike and I'm understandably protective.

How worried should I be about having it on the rack for all that time with it being blasted by bugs, dust, and god knows what else?  I looked for one of those strectchy covers for the bike but my rack is an upright bike rack not a fork rack and I can't find one for this type.  Any other suggestions about how to protect it?

(I have been lobbying to pack the bike in the car but I'm afraid my wife exercised her veto.)

just make sure you pull it off before driving into the garage She'll be okay but you could pull over every 100 miles and wipe her down

Ship the kids UPS.  It'll be a lot quieter with the bike in the minivan. 

Do you still have the old bike?  The one you were willing to abuse with 15 hours in the wind, bugs, rain, and dust?  Take it instead of the new one.

Ive done long drives with my babies on the roof. I dont like it, but they survuve. I worry about rock hits or a bird strike at 80 mph just demolishing my bike.

One of these days I will buy a damn SUV.
