yep,
Subject: Training/Racing shoes (running focused)

I'm looking to purchase some new running shoes and stuck between two options:

  1. Purchase two training shoes (identical) and switch them back and forth until my races
  2. Purchase a training shoes AND a racing shoe

I currently own the Asics Cumulus 10's.  I'm considering upgrading to the 11's with my new purchase.  I have used the same shoes for the past 2 seasons and I'm fairly pleased with them.  I wear a size 13 in this shoe currently.

I've been looking at certain racing shoes like the Zoots or a "lighter" version of the Cumulus but was curious what everyone else was doing.

My training will consist of around 10-20 miles per week of running.  Next season I plan on running my 6th half marathon and will also be training for a 70.3 race also.

Thank you for your input.

Based on your mileage and considering your plans, I would go with 2 pair of trainers.  I would actually go with 2 different pair and not the same.  Reason for 2 is that if you are doing 10-20 per week (obviously upping that mileage when you get closer to marathon time) you are only going to get about 6 months out of a pair of Cumulus.  By alternating shoes, you will get a little more out of them.  In addition, racing shoes are not going to help you in your training right now.  Save the racing flats for closer to race time and rotate them in properly to your training before race day.

I have training and racing shoes. Outside of a run or two when I first buy racing shoes the only time I use them is when I race. If you're looking to buy racing flats to use in a rotation with your standard trainers it would likely chew them up quickly, so not recommended.

I get new trainers about every two months and rotate them in with older ones. Currently I rotate 4 pairs and retire the oldest ones when I get new shoes. I run a bit more than you so a couple pairs of trainers would work well in your situation.

If you can score a good deal on the flats, get them, otherwise wait until you're closer to your races.

Thanks.  I think I'm going to go with two pairs of training shoes and closer to race day I'll get some racing flats.
