Subject: Advice about Cervelo P1
Hi.  I'm finally looking to purchasing my first Tri-specific bike and was looking for advice on the Cervelo P1.

I have a cycling background and currently ride a Fuji SL-1.  Throughout the year, I'll likely spend 60-70% of my training time on this bike, with the tri bike used for 3-4 races a year (sprints, olympic, and hopefully a 70.3).

I'm concerned about going from a high-end carbon road bike to an aluminum tri bike. I don't think I do enough tris to justify spending the money on a carbon tri bike (although I love the P2).

Anyone else in that predicament?  Any advice?

Ray

I have been looking at the P1 now for a couple months.  With the Ultegra components and science Cevelo apparently puts into designing the frames, it seems like an excellent value to me.  I am going from a front suspension mountain bike with nobby off road tires so I think it will be a significant improvement for me.  I considered the carbon P2 which if figure is about $1000k more expensive but my thoughts are that the return on investment (in terms of race results) for the $1700 on the P1 is considerably higher than it would be for a P2 at $2700.  You obviosly wouldn't get as much benefit going froma high end road bike to the P1 as I would.

Take my advice with a grain of salt.  I just finished my first sprint yesterday and while I met my overall time goal on the bike and was very satisfied with my effort, I got seriously owned by many tri and road bikes an am suffering from a serious case of bike envy.

I have an 08 P2SL and love it. It was my first bike purchase in 10 years so I had low expectations. That said, my times are equal to many of my peers with Carbon Bikes costing 3-4x as much. My thoughts were in my first couple of years in the sport, the engine needs a heck of a lot more work than the time savings carbon, etc would provide. I did upgrade the wheels which helped, but only after the first year of racing/training.

I love the bike and just brought it in to LBS for tune up and chain swap after puttign 2,000 miles on it. I have yet to have issues and the cost vs. value was best I could find with this bike.

Good luck.

I own an 09 P1.  It's a fantastic bike, the components are top quality and the aluminum is really a minor deal in my opinion.  It rides better than alot of carbon bikes I've tried and as far as weight goes it's rider has alot of grams to drop before I worry about the bike's weight.

I bought it online and it was a huge pain to assemble.  I got an LBS to put it together for me (no local cervelo dealers).
