Subject: taking my tri bike off the paved trail?
So this weekend some friends and I are going on a bike ride for about 40 miles to a hotel to party and then ride back Sunday at a 10-12mph pace. I just found out today that once the trail leaves the city it turns into "crushed limestone" I am going to be taking my only bike... my tri bike. They all are mountain bikers. I ride on some fairly new gatorskins that I havent had a flat with yet and am curious as to whether or not it is a good idea to go on a slow ride on "crushed limestone" or if I should start asking around to borrow or rent a mountain bike for the weekend. If anyone has any thoughts that would be wonderful. Thanks a lot.

If you have more space in your wheelwells get some knobbie cyclocross tires. They will give you more traction and you should be good to go. But...... that will be the same prices as a rental.

If its very very hard pack, then you might be unhappy, but you'll survive.  Anything less and I predict you'll be unhappy, and if there are steep hills, then I predict you will be hating life.  I got caught out on a reasonably hard packed dirt road once, and it just was not fun.  (It didn't help that I was on a very very steep hill -- a mountain, really.  The back tire spun more than it gripped.  I ended up walking for part of the way.)

then think about frame impact....normal roads arent that "abrasive" on your frame shock wise...you'll be creating some great stress on your frame in the "bumps". be careful
