My little sister talked me into the Dash For Divas this year. It's my first tri. Any advice would be appreciated. I am totally nervous about the swim, definitely excited about the event as a whole though. I've run some 10ks and 5ks, but the swim thing is a bit intimidating. Do they have people posted in the water in boats or anything like that? Ya know, just as a precautionary measure. Oh yea, she says I should get a road bike, but my hubbie says to use my mt. bike. If I decide that I like the whole tri thing, then invest in a bike. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance.

Susan!  Welcome.

I've only done one Tri and it was in a pool, so I'm not much help.  But I do believe there are kayaks posted in the water for safety reasons.  And there won't be any men to run us over!

I did my first Tri on a hybrid bike and will be using it again for this Tri.  My friend used his mountain bike for our first Tri and did rather well!  I think most people would recommend using whatever bike you have at first to see if this is something you're truly going to stick with and enjoy before investing in an expensive road bike.  Another option is to put road tires on your mountain bike.  They'll do it for you at the bike shop if you want.  I think they were $15 each ($30 set) around here.  My friend just had road tires put on his mountain bike and said it helped.

I have two more Tri's and if I'm still loving it as much as I am now; I may look at an entry level road bike for Christmas.  In the meantime I want to do some research on road bikes etc, so I'll be making a wise choice when the time comes.

Edit : Oh, by the way..... come join us in the other Dash for Divas thread that was already started!  There are three of us so far and you will make four!

Thanks for the info. I will definitely look into having my tires switched. I didn't know you could have that done. I will check out the other thread as well.

Well, the road tires for the mountain bike are still wider than regular road bike tires, but they are smooth rather than nubbie.

Good luck!
