Age Group Rank = 62/72
Pre-race routine:

I woke up and had some OJ and a bland muffin. Didn't sleep well because I was nervous.
Event warmup:

It was raining and freezing. We all huddled under the bathroom overhang. The ocean felt warmer than being outside.
Swim
  • 18h 43m
  • 800 yards
  • 2h 20m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

This swim was in mission bay San Diego. There was no current. I am very comfortable in the water so that made it easier when all these feet and arms were in my face. I thought I was heading towards a bouy and then I would be off the next tiem I looked up.
What would you do differently?:

Try to stay on course more
Transition 1
  • 03m 22s
Comments:

I drank way too much sea water and felt kind of funny going towards transition. I had to stuggle with the wetsuit a little bit.
What would you do differently?:

Practice with the wet suit more.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 36s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12.76 mile/hr
Comments:

I had filled my water bottle with gatorade before the race and I grabbed the gatorade right away. Bad Idea. With the sea water in my stomach and then the gatorade, I was instantly nauseated. I stayed nauseated for the rest of the race and had nothing to drink for the bike portion. On top of that there was a problem with my gears. My bike would only go in the hightest gear or the lowest gear. I don't know if the rain had anything to do with that but it was bad. Knowing I had the run still I chose to stay in low gear most of the time.
What would you do differently?:

Not but gatorade in my bottle!
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

I wore the same shoes biking and running so transition was quick. It was raining and everything was soaked.
Run
  • 36m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Still so nauseated from the gatorade I started the run by walking. I knoew I would puke if I did not walk. I got some water along the way and finally felt good enough to run a bit
What would you do differently?:

No more gatorade!!
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around the parking lot a bit and ate a bagel. I cried! The feeling was overwhelming.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike and Nausea

Congratulations!! Was this your first race?  I hope you had fun and will do it again.  Way to fight back from the nausea...you may get to like gatorade again...at least maybe not with sea water mixed in?  Take care -SMO

Congratulations! Sorry to hear about the nausea. My daughter still won't drink Jamba Juice because she threw up after having one after her first ocean swim. As a matter of fact, she hurls after most ocean swims. And she is a good swimmer. But she has the nausea pretty much under control now. She only drinks water in T1 and she uses Propel in her Aerobottle, it seems to keep her tummy a bit more settled. I think it is a combination of the salt water and adrenaline that causes the nausea. And the sugar in Gatorade just makes it worse.

This was my first Tri but not my last. The way I look at it, I have plenty of room to improve!
