I need new tires for an old road bike I've pulled out of my mom's attic.  It is a 10 speed with 27" rims.  Nice shape, just dry rotted tires.  I went to the LBS, you know, thinking support the local shop, get some good knowledge, all that stuff.  I asked to look at his selection of 27" road bike tires for an old 10 speed, and he showed me to the 700c tires.  I told him that they would not fit, it's a 27" rim, not 700c.  He insisted they were the same!?!  I assured him they were different, he wouldn't believe it.  wtf?  How do these bozo's plan to stay in business with geniuses like this fronting their shop?  I left dumbfounded and empty handed, and ordered a set online.  I have no doubt the owner is a good guy, and into bikes, but come on.  At least a LITTLE screening or training of the employees maybe?

I shudder to think of this guy selling/fitting a bike to some unknowing customer who thinks they are paying more for 'service and knowledge' from their LBS.

Geeez. I agree with u there on that experience. I know that my LBS is very knowledgable and helped me out a lot. Perhaps it was an inexperienced employee which can obvisouly taint the reputation of the LBS.

Yeah, the first phrase an inexperienced shop employee needs to learn is "I don't know the answer to that, let me find somebody more experienced to help you."
