Subject: route tracking

I saw "route tracking" on Marmadaddy's post about plans for the future. I don't know if what I'm referring to is the same as what route tracking refers to. I have been using gmap-pedometer.com to measure distances for my runs, and I just thought that BT might be able to benefit by partnering with such a website (there are many, all I believe based on Google Earth). Eventually, it might be possible to develop a database of running routes, and if there is a way for users to rate/rank the routes and a way for users to view other users' routes, that would be very cool. Then, say, if you move to a new city/area or are on a business trip or something, you can get an idea of routes others have used. I think most of that capability exists to a limited degree on stand-alone websites, but when integrated into a community like BT it would be very cool. Just a thought.

Thanks for everything!

I love gmap-pedometer.com. I have been getting tired of driving my car to figure out my distance. A database divided by cities where people would have access to post their own routes sounds like a great idea. Not that I'm offering services to build it, I have no idea how. But it does sound great.

Another way is BTers could post links in the specified State in US Group Training and Who's Training Forum's.

Good ideas. This is pretty much what we have in mind.

There are a number of map sites out there like gmap-pedometer that will let you plot a route and save it as a URL. I have a folder in my Bookmarks menu that's comprised of run and bike routes from gmap-pedometer and I'll put the URL in the comments section of my blog. I'm thinking we could have the list of urls but with attach attributes like sport, distance, workout type, elevation gain etc. Maybe some user-defined attributes. If you picked a route for a workout, the distance could be automatically entered into your training log. Ooh, I just thought of a cool graph for this: counts of which routes you used over a given period of time.

A community database of routes is a great idea. People could rate them and leave tips about them. We could also eventually include these with Races if people were to create them for race routes. We could have a button to "Submit to the public route database" but it would be anonymous in case someone didn't want it advertised what routes they run.

I also use gmap-pedometer as a safety tool. I leave my planned route up on the computer so my wife knows how far and where I plan to run or ride.

In addition to specific cities, how about searching for a route (or something else) by zip code? Or by a given number of miles from a city or zip code?

Maybe I've said too much.

I do the same thing, although I have a few routes that I keep on top of the fridge, and when I go to run I put that one on the front.

I also like the idea on anonymity for the post of routes. I'm not worried about myself in particular. But I'm sure (the following is not meant to sound sexists or degrading) there are many women who wouldn't want everyone to know where they run. Especially if they are alone.

Well now, its time to decide were I'm going to run while at Disney next weekend.
