Pre-race routine:

I got up at 0400 and had coffee and half a multigrain bagel with PB. Arrived at the venue at at 6:00, set up my transition area and proceeded to the pool for pre-race meeting, marking and lane assignment.
Event warmup:

Jumped in the pool and swam a few lengths of breast to warm up. I was swimmer #2,(yellow cap). There was to be 5 people per lane with 5 secs starting between each. We only had 3 in our lane, so I had lots of space.
Swim
  • 12m 25s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

I felt really good about my swim time, as is was 1 min faster than any of my training 500m swims
What would you do differently?:

Do more crawl. After the first 150m I had to alternate crawl and breast. Work on strength and technique.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

There was no separate time for the transitions (they are included in bike and run portions)
What would you do differently?:

I would choose a top that more easily pulled on over top of swimsuit. The one I chose was too tight and got stuck on my wet body and was hard to pull down.
Bike
  • 58m 20s
  • 19 kms
  • 19.54 km/hr
Comments:

I enjoyed the bike route and inproved my time on the second lap. By the third lap I was starting to fatigue and didn't want to push and not leave enough legs for the run.
What would you do differently?:

I would have given a little more juice to the bike ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 was fast as I just needed to grab my Mickey Mouse ball cap and head for the exit chute.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 31m 26s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 17s  min/km
Comments:

I felt that I did a good job on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Do more hill training to strenthen calf muscles. I'm glad I did some good brick workouts in the final 3 weeks of training. Will do more of those in regular training.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water. Walked around and did some stretches.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I still have at least 20 pounds to lose. This weight loss will definately help with all three events. The mtn bike is heavy and, well, a mtn bike, not a racing bike. I would like to have a better set of wheels SOON!
I will spend more time training on the bike to get more comfortable going faster, especially on the hills.

Event comments:

I thought there was going to be 200 people for this race, but as it turned out only 98 were there. Since this race was sponsored by Peter Reid's Frontrunner's store, and a fundraiser, there were a large number of seasoned vetrans there to support this cause, which was great. I felt a little overwhelmed by the athletes around me, (and their equipment), but I still concentrated on performing the best race for me. I am proud of my accomplishment in this race and will do it again next year. I got to meet and talk to Laurie Bowden, which was great. For a first race I could not have asked for too much more. Race photos to follow in my album.

Darlene,
Don't get caught up in what other people have. I have been past by many of mtn bikes. Once even by my friend "One Leg Warren", so its not the bike its the person pushing the bike.
Good job!
