I see folks mention them left and right in their training and I'm clueless... as Ricky Ricardo says, I need some 'splainin'!

Splits are the breakdown of your race and or training session.
Simply put for a 5K: Mile 1-7:22, Mile 2-7:45, Mile 3.1-7:01
This also shows a negative split, where the last lap/mile is faster than the previous.

This applies to all 3 desciplines regardless of what distances you are completing.

A general definition would be "time spent in an athletic endevour".

Specifically what's being measured depends on the context. It can be time per mile on the run, time per lap on a 2 lap course, time for each half of a race,  time per 100 yards on the swim, time for each leg of a triathlon etc.

Thanks folks. I get it I think...simply the breakdown of each segment in terms of overall speed.

Do people work out with splits in mind - for example - Today I will swim 1500 meters and do one speed split, 2 kick board, 2 speed etc...?
