First, welcome to the best site for those new to the sport !

Look around at local rec centers and health clubs, and start the way I did, with an indoor triathlon at one of these facilities.

My first race was only 300M in the pool, a 6 mile bike on a spin bike, and then 1.2 miles on an indoor track. This DID NOT require much training to complete the race, but gave me a taste of what was to come in a regular Sprint race.

I hope you don't mind a suggestion from someone that was in your shoes in July of this year.

I agree.  Long before I did my first event, I 'competed' in my own triathlon at the local gym.  Sure everyone looked at me like I was nuts....but I am! we all are!

This gave me a lot of confidence as to whether I would finish the race or not.

me too.  I did the swim in the neighborhood pool and had my TA (transition area) set up on the patio outside the gate.  After that I was stoked and knew I could do this.

My "first triathlon" was on my birthday a few years ago. I swam 750 in the pool, hit the stationary bike for 13.2 miles then went to the treadmill for a 5k.

My first official sprints and oly were pool swims.  Great way to "get your feet wet" so to speak.
