Just announced this morning!  Very cool!

Was planning to try Timberman next year as my first 1/2 IM, but I think now I will have to opt for the hometown course.

The bike course is one of my favorite long rides; most of the course is north/south and avoids the steep drumlins that are a recurring feature of the landscape in central New York.  There are some manageable climbs and one very steep hill (think "wall") at around mile 38, but there are long, gradually descending stretches where you can fly.  Run course is fairly level, with one extended climb on Rock Cut Rd.  The swim?  We'll have to hope they figure out how to deal with the weeds in Jamesville Resevoir; if they don't, bring your machetes!

Just signed up!!! My husband said it's getting close to being sold out (where did he get that info? I don't know), so I bucked up.  I'm hoping it doesn't interfere with racing Lake George.  But, nonetheless, I'm stoked!

I just signed up... VERY, VERY excited about this race. I grew up in the Syracuse area (Liverpool, to be exact). I've been living in Southeast PA/NJ since I went to Temple University... it'll be great to go back home! This looks like a great course. It will be my 2nd Half IM, but this will be a lot hillier than my first HIM (DE Diamondman a few weeks ago). When I first saw the race, I thought, UH-OH, they're going to make us swim in Onondaga Lake (disgusting). Thank goodness not. Should be some nice, cool weather in upstate NY that time of year.

Happy training, everyone!

WittyCityGirl -

I'm thinking the same thing about Lake George. I guess I should them email to see if they are changing their date so as not to conflict with Syracuse. But really, they would have to shift it by two weekends in order to hope to capture most of the people who are planning to do Syracuse.

I would like to believe that the 70.3 people looked long and hard at other date options before settling on the same weekend that as Lake George. There would seem to be enough weekends to go around, but maybe not. I can't remember when Finger Lakes was this year, but I am sure that Syracuse will have an impact on that race, also.

I don't want to think that the modus operandi of 70.3 is based on the principal of "engulf and devour"! (But it sure seems that way at times!)

Having said all that, I don't mean to be negative about this race! It IS one I am considering.....but I just don't want to miss Lake George! (gimme, gimme!)

I'm thinking that Lake George probably wouldn't take into consideration the 70.3. I shot them an email and it didn't seem to be a concern.

I'm in for Syracuse 70.3 (and so is my hubby...his first half).  How could I turn down a half 30 minutes from my driveway?  My tri club has mini-sprints where the swim and transitions will be every week during the summer.  Get ready for some hills!

Is there any way to find out how many people are registered for this event online? I see on the site you can see the list of who is registered, but I don't see a total number. Will this event fill up? I don't want to miss out, but would like to wait a while before commiting due to an injury.

I've just been copying the list and pasting it into Excel to get a count that way! Last time I checked, it was around 500.

My (very limited) understanding about the official 70.3 races is that the cutoff is somewhere between 1,200 and 2,000 racers, so there should be lots of space available. The 2009 EagleMan Ironman 70.3 in Maryland had over 1,700 racers and the 2010 race is already sold out. But that race has been around for at least 8 years. Since Syracuse is a new race, it might not fill up.

The other big selling point for Eagleman is the Kona slots -- one of just a handful of 70.3 races that dangles them as competitive carrots. My guess is that Syracuse has had its initial rush of entries, and now will just settle back into a steady, gradual pace -- the LSD (long, slow distance) approach to race registrations!

Hi Steve, Thanks for the info. I was not aware that an athlete could qualify for Kona in a 70.3 race. I learn something new about this awesome sport everyday! Bill

I'm in. Is anyone planning on training on the bike course this spring/summer? One of my training partners is racing it as well and I thought it might be a good opportunity for a small training camp weekend.

I've added this to my (short) list of planned races for the year. I'm planning on hitting the bike course by late June / early July and I'd love to ride with anyone who I can keep up with for 50+ miles =)

I have an old high school buddy who I found out also races tris. I haven't seen him in over 20yrs and we are planning on both doing this race. He is already signed up and I will be signing up as soon as cash flow improves. We grew up in Carthage (50miles north of Syracuse) and we both have a lot of family still in the area. So we are hoping to have a very large cheering gallery for the race as well.

I see in the weekly Fleet Feet email from the Syracuse store, that they are starting up a Tri training series for beginners and intermediates looking to get better at the sport or learn for the first time. Sounds like a great program and I wish I could attend. But after dropping 500 for my wife and I to actually race the 70.3, two new bikes, and all the gear to go along with diving into this sport head first, I'm tapped out. I think it's about 185 dollars. And that would be a lot of things my kids could use. I know, I hear the violins playing in the background.

Thats what makes this sport so  great.  You do what u can do and look forward to doing more in the future.,   You can always get more gear/gadgets. The challenge is making themost out of what you have. enjoy!

Signing up in the next few days.  Working towards my first olympic (NYC) in July, so may as well extend the training and continue on to knock of my first 70.3 as well!

Only 2 pages of posts! We gotta get more chatty on our thread!!

Has anyone specifically started training for this race?  I'm doing IM Lake Placid, so my training has begun, but my husband isn't starting until June to prep for the HIM.
