I'm looking forward to SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon as my first triathlon.
Any tips from experienced triathletes who have done it before?

Hi everyone,

I'll be competing is the sherox, and am getting excited. Was bummed when the swimming was canceled at the Philadelphia Women's Triathlon so I'm hoping the river runs smoothly!!

I think the swim and run are pretty similar to the philly women's tri. The bike is a little different, a bit shorter but with a little hill. If you map the run on mapmyride you can check the elevations. What is one man's hill is another man's mountain and vice versa. I'm slow on the flats and uphill so what the heck.

Looking forward to the race. Hope everyone has fun.

There was a really bad thunderstorm around midnight, the night before the race.  When it rains, the river starts to move faster and runoff from the farms upriver cause the bacteria level to increase to really bad levels.  If you don't want the swim cancelled, pray for no rain on the 1st.

Check http://www.phillyrivercast.org for the current river quality.

Thanks for the link, bummer it's red today, how long does it take to change? Does any significant rain send it into the red?

I have been monitoring the http://www.phillyrivercast.org site since the beginning of last week. It's been mostly yellow or red..
At this point, at least there is no overnight rain for 8/1, which is good for us.

Just happened to find this forum when I was researching the river status.

It has been status red for several days and we're looking at a good chance of rain over the next three days.  I don't think it looks good for swimming and I'm totally bummed.      This was to be my first Tri and I've been busting my butt in the pool to get ready.  I run and bike all the time and it just seems to take something away from the feel of it if I don't have the challenge of the swim.  There is the wildwood tri in a few weeks but after sinking $100+ to register and a few hundred more on a bike and gear, there is no way we'll spring for another $100 reg fee.

exactly how I feel.. my problem is also that running is my weakest part of the race.. At this point, I'm ok with swimming and biking, but running has been "just get through it" from the beginning.. Having to "get through it" twice is a bit intimidating...

Yes me too,I'll keep my fingers crossed. No swim will be a total bummer especially if they add an additional 2 mile run like at the Philadelphia Women's Tri. It will be my first too and I have another scheduled for mid September but if there is no swim I may look for another to do in mid August.

I probably watch the river quality more than most and I'd be fairly optimistic for the swim. The river is yellow right now which usually means it's acceptable for swimming (this has been my experience when taking actual samples when the water is yellow and sometimes even red). Remember, riverwatch is based on statistics, probability and math, so it's up to the moment information but it's not as accurate as an actual test. However, an actual test isn't as up to the minute as riverwatch.

Friday doesn't look like a wash out...just scattered storms. Saturday look like it will be rain free, so if Sunday morning is clear I think you have a good chance for the swim. Also, the flow rate is pretty low right now which is usually a good indicator for quality.

Don't fret over riverwatch too much until maybe Saturday. Remember, for the Philly Tri it was red for about two straight weeks and then cleared for the race. For the women's race it was green for almost the entire two weeks preceding the race and a nasty storm came it over night...so it's mostly the weather for the day or two leading up to the race. In the last five years there have been about 20 different triathlons in the Schuylkill and all but two got the swim off and in both cases it would have been good except for strong storms the night before the race.

Good luck and I hope you swim!!

What do you use for Philly Women's; RiverCast or your own testing resource? Is there any requirement from the City?

We use both. We do actual water samples that are sent out to a lab which gives us the actual quality. Even the rivercast was "red" when we took the sample, the results came back well within limits (I think it was FOUR times below the threshold). The problem with this is that it gives you the actual quality for the time and date when the sample was taken and as we know all bodies of water are subject to change especially depending on the weather.

So, we also use riverwatch as an indicator of real time data. I certainly don't consider riverwatch to be as accurate as an actual test but it IS a great tool.

Sweet!  That is the one thing I'm a bit worried about and I'm thinking if I can get in and get a feel for the river, I'll shake some nerves off.

The swim practice area is usually at the swim exit for the Philly sprint tri's.

You missed a pep talk, info on rules such as no drafting, no ipods, always wear helmet on bike, make sure to have end caps on handlebars, post race:no picking up bikes until after 10:30, etc. Looks good for the swim tomorrow, I'm so relieved!
Best of luck and have fun!

Philly Rivercast still has the water quality as red. I was told that they would not make a decision until 6:00 am. Any one have any thoughts?
