Hello-
I'm looking to "TRY" my first tri this summer.I'm 5'10" and about 185 pounds so this will be a real challenge for me.I've been active all my life but most of my background consist of extreme Moutain biking and recreational swimming. I'm a not a strong runner, 5K kicks my butt. I run everyday because I know this is my weak spot. Tri's make me nervous beacause of the run. But since I live in Michigan I'm limited to events I can practice outdoors. My other problem is my bike, Its awsome on the trails, terrible on the streets, so if anyone had any suggestions they would be great.

well, the streets make me nervous as well -- this being the Motor City and all, I'll usually hear a "get on the sidewalk" refrain a few times a season.

It's boring I know, but I try to stick to Hines Drive. I also have biked out in the Ann Arbor area where they're a little more used to cyclists.

good luck with the training!!

5'10" 185, what's wrong with that?  Nothing.

Michigan will get good for training in another month or two.  We have state and metro parks, plus country roads.  Its good that you are training your weakness now.  It'll sure make things easier down the road ... pun intended.

Have you heard of xterra or x-tri events?  They ride XC mtb trails instead of roads, and typically run trails instead of roads.  There are several around here.  I think the first is in late may or early june .... Fort Custer?

You can also slap a set of 1.50-1.75" slick on your mtb wheels for your first event.  It'll be better than the knobbies.

Anyways, welcome to BT.  Check out the MI training forum.  There are some good folks from this state that get together for group training and meet up for races, etc.  Chekc it out and don't be shy to show up for an event.

Welcome to the site, GG. We do have a solid crew in Michigan, do some group training every once in a while, and generally cause a commotion wherever we go. It's a good thing.

Anyway, a few of us locally have been at the tri stuff for a while, and if there's anything I/we can help with, please PM me or post away on tri-talk. There's a wealth of information on the site, and even more when you catch up in person.

Ooh, and one other thing...running everyday may be good for overcoming the fear of running, but your legs will rebel against you after a little bit - rest and recovery are just as important as the running. There are some great trianing plans on BT....I think the 'winter maintenance, running focus' would really help the running AND keep some balance, but may be too much volume for you. Alternatively, you may want to ease into it with a couch to sprint or couch to oly plan. They're formulated to keep you uninjured, and work well. Just a thought.
