Subject: Are mountain bike bar ends allowed?

Preparing for my 1st tri on saturday....my end caps on mountain bike bars are missing...asked the Mrs. to stop at LBS and pick up "bar ends", instead of "bar caps".  I had mixed up my motorcycling and bicycling vernacular and as such, she came back with mountain bike bar ends instead of handlebar end caps.  See pic below.

Are these allowed for a USAT triathlon provided the bar ends are caped?  Any help is appreciated...thanks!

Good question. I know under USCF racing for strictly bicycle races, they're not. But bar ends are no different than aerobars in terms of danger of piercing a downed rider (that's the reason USCF bans them in MTB legal road races and cyclocross).

I'd guess they're legal, but check the rule book as USAT to be sure.

Yes. At my first triathlon, I rode a mtn bike equipped with those bar ends and did not have a problem with the refs. And it was nice to be able to change my hand position Good luck and have fun!

I don't see why not. All you've really done is made a pursuit bar.

They're on the bike now, if I need to take them off its a 5 minute job that I can do onsite after tech inspection.

 Thanks for the thoughts...!
