Subject: Freestyle 100m world record considerations

Since I started swimming for triathlon, I am looking more interested to swim races on TV.

Now, if I take the 100m world record and I multiply it by 2, we are just under 1'35"

If i go to the swimming pool, trying to do 1'35" shot, maybe I can do it or maybe not, I don't know but for sure I will be blue like the water after trying it...Anyway, it is not a time for a recreational swimmer

If we take now the 100m world record on running and we multiply it by 2 again, I guess that 70% of the common people can make it (around 19" even if they are not trained at all.

Any comment?

Well...anybody can run, I guess. There's no specific technique required (esp. at 19 seconds per 100). Swimming, however, is entirely technique dependent. So it requires some specific training. That's probably the difference.

edit: you're probably, though, better off comparing the 100 free to the 400m on the track, since the times are roughly equivalent.

And I would argue that with just 3 or 4mos of consistent training, you could reach 1:35.

x2 - I'd recommend the beginner HIM training plan [RPE], even if you're not training for a HIM. It worked wonders for me.
