Subject: Crosstraining with Aikido

I've been running/cycling/swimming fairly regularly now for the last 3-4 months and I feel great! My goal for the next couple of months is to gradually increase the amount of exercise I do to approximately 7-10 times per week (I currently average about 5-6).

For the last couple of years, I've been training in Aikido as well, averaging about 2 sessions per week, about 1 1/ hrs each time. As my dojo was closed during the summer, I haven't really had to combine it with all the Tri-stuff, but I now see some conflicts emerging... Unfortunately, I only have that much time to work out, so I need to choose carefully. I sort of think I can manage that though.

What I'm wondering is how my body will cope with all these different assaults on it.

I actually hope/think Aikido might positively affect my tri-training, since it provides a good aerobic work out and increases my flexibility. I love my Aikido training and I love my tri-training and think it would be a great pity if they weren't compatible.

Are there any other people out there that do this combination of tri-training and Aikido?

Thanks!

The Duck

I had to all but give up Kendo and Iaido at the start of this year as I found my fitness and recovery suffered. I found three evening sessions per week combined with my tri training was too much. I still do a bag work kickboxing/sparring session once a week (starting again this week after summer break) and this doesn't really affect my tri training. I have also cut my weights down from 3-4 times per week to 2-3 times per month.

I would say keep up the martial arts, but listen to your body. If you are feeling over fatigued or not getting sufficient recovery time something has to give.

I am a newbie to the tri sport... but I spent my high school and college days wrestling picked up some mma stuff after college (grappling, kickboxing etc...) I find that the drilling and technical practice does not stress my body too badly and I like to think that I benefit in the flexibility category.  Where I notice a very distinct difference is after an open mat "roll/live" session I am whooped on a swim/bike/run... My opinion in this.  Keep your training in mind.  Where are you in your cycle?  How far out is the race etc...  For me the exercise is all about fun!  Some people golf, some people play tennis.  What do you do for fun?

Good luck!

I just wrapped up my 3rd season of triathlons with Ironman Louisville this past weekend and I've been practicing Aikido since 2001.  My first 2 seasons of triathlons I was able to balance my tri training and still make it to Aikido at least 3-4 times/week.  However, this summer with the Ironman training I dropped Aikido completely for about 4-5 months.  However, I will get back to it starting next week.  They can be compatible, but it might come down to a matter of priority given the demands on your available time.

BTW - my sensei and his wife were at the finish line this weekend to cheer me on, so he obviously supported my other pursuits as well.

I started Karate January 2007 and training for triathlons in January of 2008. I go to classes twice a week, Thursday and Sundays, 2 hours at a time. To start off I took those days off of tri training, however I found I needed a rest day too which would leave me only 4 days of tri training a week which I felt was not enough.

I started to throw in a workout on Sunday, a long run or bike. Then in August I threw in a lunch run on Thursdays as well. I took Mondays off completely. I found that it was doable. After a while, the biggest problem was finding the time to train 3 hours on a thursday and more than 4 on a Sunday.

I do not stregnth train either. Because of this I find my karate classes helpfull in terms of pushups, lunges and core training. And, as others have said, although our warm up is very rigerous, I find normally that at least an hour of the class is technique, which is very easy cardiovascularly and stregnth wise.

I would say that while I hope the Karate training helps my tri training in terms of some stregnth and core excercises, I have found that it is actually the s/b/r/ that helps my karate training because I now feel that I am in the top 5 percent of the class in terms of physical fitness so I can concentrate more on the technique and learning than sucking wind.

So do it. Take your time. Add slowly.
