Subject: Garmin 305 question

I'm looking to buy a Garmin 305 and am wondering whether I need the bike sensor.  Without that that can I still get speed and distance (but no cadence)?  Do you really only need the bike sensor if you'll be using the unit on a trainer or want cadence? Thanks.

Yes.  The unit calculates speed and distance using the GPS data.  This won't work while on the trainer (my 305 told me I travelled 100m on a trainer ride...   If you want accurate instantaneous speed or speed and distance where you may have GPS reception issues then the bike sensor is helpful.

You may find it helpful to get the bike senson, its $40 and well worth it to track your speed/cad instantly. I just ordered my own "multisport bundle" from Amazon (305, speed/cad, quick relase, bike mount) for $244 shipped. I should have it next week.

Does anyone know why ordering everything seperatly is $160 than the bundle pack Garmin offers?

I got the sensor because I wanted to see cadance and use my 305 indoors.  Other than that you don't need it.

I used mine for riding outdoors, and as soon as I got my trainer I got the cadence sensor. If you plan on riding indoors at all you need it.
