Subject: Polar Footpod

Does anyone know if there is a way to reprogram a Polar Footpod to accurately record times above 14.7 MPH.  (Not for my running....I wish!)

I was surprised that my maximum rate on a hilly bike route was recorded as 14.7.  I know that those downhills were a "little" faster.

I find it strange that the footpod cannot calculate faster speeds, but it records the distance and time accurately.

So...

1) Can I reprogram it to record bike rides, or

2) Do I need to spend MORE $$ on a bike computer, or

3) Should I just not worry about my pace and keep training?

The Polar footpod is a gyro-based device and won't work if you're just spinning your feet. It needs the motion and foot landing to work, which is why it only works when you're running. You can either get a Polar GPS unit which will use GPS signals to record speed/distance (assuming your watch is newer than the 625/725 and designed to work with it, e.g. the RS800), or you can put sensors on your bike (cadence and/or speed/distance). There are 2 types of bike sensors, so you have to be sure to get the kind that work with your watch. You can either just wear your watch or mount the watch onto the handlebars to read while you're riding. Take a look at the features of your watch to see what works with it:

I'm sorry, I failed to specify that I have the Polar G1 GPS Footpod

I just saw that the Polar G3 goes up to 55k/hour...that is enough to take care of me, unless I want to check my speed off of a cliff!!!  I guess that my G1 is already obsolete after 2 months!

OK...I see the confusion. The G1 GPS dongle isn't a footpod! It works better if it's nearer the watch, either on your arm or the waist of your shorts. But you're right, it has a limit on mph, but it's rated to about 18.5mph or so.
