Comments:

This was my first meet and I am very excited about my time. It was 15 seconds less than my lowest goal range. (28-30min)

I just went out there and did it I didn't have any strategy, they say your first race go out and finish, and I think that is good advice.

Christie and Walker went with me to cheer me on. I'm glad they were there it helped settle my nerves.
What would you do differently?:

Remember: Don't hold back the arms when you are kicking faster in the end let the arms go at the pace of the legs.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the pool.
Floated on my back in the pool.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience.

Event comments:

Small meet, good to see who is out there and watch how people swim. There were some ex-college swimmers there, so it was nice to be able to see the correct way to swim.

First one down, only improvement from here.

Great swim!  I need some of your speed on the swim.  Nice race.  Do you do Tri's also?

Thanks, although I'm not a swimmer I kind of wanted to know what my time would be for the mile since I'm building to do a half ironman in Lubbock in June. I think I could do .2 miles more. I am going to have to work on following up that workout though with the swimming and the biking.

I started swimming with a masters swim team at Thanksgiving and its really helped, not just with speed, but with going the distance. I think its easier to get the work done mentally while training with a team.

I told my coach I was training for triathlon so on MW I warmup with the team, but then go on to do my own thing, which is normally a 1000M steady state. I was overtraining when I was doing intervals 4X a week. I find swimming is so hard. It takes so much energy. But it is getting better. I used to think 800M was a ridiculous distance to swim straight.

Now if I can just get over that fear of open water swimming.

Thanks for the encouragement.

You sure are an inspiration.  I am still trying to get the nerve to show up for  Masters swimming, and you are swimming in meets!  Just do it, I guess...

I got so much faster so quickly after joining I figured what the hell. If I want to swim 1.2 miles in a race open water, I better be able to do 1 mile in the pool.

It was also a reality check. I have gotten a lot faster, but there are still quite a few people faster than me. I figure I've got alot more room for improvement. While they are working on taking seconds off their time I'm taking minutes. I think minutes is more motivational.

I watched them practice for 6 months before joining the group. I was in the pool, but swimming on my own. A nice long plateau and off-season got me out of that funk. Of course I thouroughly warned the coach beforehand of my inability.

Good thing was he didn't jam my head all at once with a lot of technique. I normally work on one thing a day. I really enjoy it and suggest it to anyone.

If I can do it, you can do it. Im a sinker. You ever hear the term, swimming like a brick, I used to do that. Burned alot of calories and got me nowhere.

Happy Training everyone!
