Subject: Valve stems
When buying tubes, should one always pick the shortest valve stem possible, based on the rim depth, or does it matter? I have two sets of wheels, and one has a deeper rim than the other. Do I need to buy two sets of spare tubes? Is there any disadvantage or problem with using a longer stem with the shallower rim?

My relatively uninformed take on it is that with a stem that is too long you could run the risk of stem damage more easily.  On the other hand, a slightly short stem is a little bit fussier to seat the pump head onto (this one I know from first hand experience), but it still functions.

Just buy tubes that fit the deeper rim so you don't have to worry about having the wrong tube with you. There is no real disadvantage to having a slightly long valve stem.

I buy the longer stems. This past weekend I had a flat and the tube had a short stem. I had bought this tube at a shop which didn't have the longer steps when I was at an out of town race. The CO2 inflator barely fit on the valve.

I use long stems.  In my mind, better too much stem than not enough.
