I must confess - after my "break" this summer I really wasn't planning to return to triathlon. School is finished, the business is up and running, life has settled down - yet I didn't have the urge to return to training. I really thought I was done, I'd maybe swim a bit, and of course do scads of yoga - but that was it for tri's for me.

That changed on Nov 24. Or actually - it changed a few days after that when I escaped my fog ... a good friend of mine commited suicide last Monday - he was a cop, a husband, a joker, a traveller, a leader, a great man, and a triathlete - he is already registered for a few shorter distance races this 2009 season, and is registered for the Calgary 70.3 ... his main goal was Penticton 2010.

Now I'm thinking of returning for another season of triathlon in his honour. I know how badly he wanted it - how hooked he was after watching and volunteering at his first races, how he was blogging his training, and how frustrated he was when injured - and he was a big part of the fundraising for TriCops.

So - you might see me out there in 2009! And if you do - I'll have his badge number written below my race numbers, every time.

This leads me to ask - is there a special reason anyone else here does tri's? Or are you all just the masochists that I so know and love. ;-)

Edited to say: I've posted something similar in CoJ

I'm sorry for your loss. But I think that would be a very special thing for you to do, good on you.

Sorry to hear that,

I had a similar experiance. My cousin committed sucide last year, I still don't really understand I have to admit. She was brillant, numerous degrees in Chemistry and Biology, and was teaching and doing research at Trinity college in Dublin. I wish had known she was in so much pain. We are almost exactly the same age, literally weeks apart, and grew up together in Ireland. I will miss her.

Nice tribute, and I'm sure you will come out of it stronger for it.

Sorry for your loss Tina. My thoughts go out to his family.

Unfortunately I am embarrased to admit that I am quite selfish in my triathlon quest. I basically do it for me.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss -

Why not start a fundraising initiative to help cops with psychological challenges related to their jobs? Might help you heal, and leave him a great legacy in Vancouver.

Just a thought.
