Comments: I went out too strong and then felt slow later on. I think I beat my previous race pace, though. What would you do differently?: Pace myself better. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: T1 seemed slow. I forgot to set out my bike shorts so, of course, I forgot to put them on. What would you do differently?: Arrive earlier and make sure my T-area is all ready to go. I could have run quicker. I could have been more mindful when putting on my shirt so it didn't get all rolled up. I could have fidgetted with my shoes AFTER riding. ![]() Bike
Comments: The bike leg was pretty grueling. The wind was brutal. I got passed up by 4 people, at least 3 of which were from the wave after me (I believe). You know, guys with disk wheels and all that. I think I was pretty strong on this leg as my pace shows. No flats or spills, luckily. I did have to stop for a very short train for about 30 seconds, though. What would you do differently?: I really need to get aero bars and a aerobar bottle so I can actually drink while riding. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I jumped off my moving bike like we practiced yesterday. Getting out of my shoes, I lost both of them, but Brenda corralled them and put them with my stuff. Since I didn't get much fluid during the bike, I decided to take my fuel belt with me. I only ended up drinking one of the two 8oz bottles and no gels, though. What would you do differently?: Keep practicing the shoe thing. Carry hat, race belt, and fuel belt with me and put it on during the run instead of before the run. ![]() Run
Comments: Looks like I did really well on the run. My goal was to break a 10min/mile pace and it looks like I did that (even though the numbers are estimates). The fuel belt was more a safety blanket than anything else. What would you do differently?: Pace myself better so I can run faster for longer. Get past the mental barrier of my "old pace" and get used to the new pace psychologically. Bottom line is I think I could have run even faster. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Walking for a little bit. I should probably have done more to warm-down. I stretched a little, too. What limited your ability to perform faster: Letting go of my habitual run pace so I can run at the new pace and not think I'm going to fast. Event comments: This was put on by the UC Davis Triathlon team but was actually done quite well. They had sponsors and lots of volunteers. We even got t-shirts! (And they're not white! Yay!) I would do this race again. Hopefully next time they'll pick a different bike route or the roads will be fixed by then. Last updated: 2005-03-16 12:00 AM

Overcast
Overall Rank = 152/179
Age Group = 31-40
Age Group Rank = 10/11
My times are approximate. They didn't track split data, just a final number, so this will have to do.
First I checked out the paths through the transition area. Then I warmed up on the course to check it out. 10 min jog, 10 min bike. I only got 1 lap of swim warm-up because of the way they did the waves.
