Subject: tweaking my stroke when breathing.
I've been getting much better at swimming lately... seemingly overnight really. One day I couldn't swim 50m without stopping, now I swim 500m with ease.

Anyways, When I take a breath, I find it really hard to turn my hips for my next stroke. (hope that makes sense, like if I take a breath on my left side, when my right arm enters the water I'm closer to flat than on my right side.)

Anybody had experience with something similar?

thanks all

By no means am I the swim expert here, but it sounds like it could be a balance issue. Do you do any drills to practice balance (ie shark-fin drill)? For years I was only breathing from to the right side, because that is what was most comfortable. My coach now has me doing bi-lateral breathing in an attempt to keep balanced while breathing on both sides (in addition to quite a few other drills).

Might be a timing issue with your breath.  You need to exhale before turning your hips to air otherwise your timing gets screwed up.  I know because I have enourmouos difficulty exhaling before turning.

What is your breathing pattern, i.e., every stroke, bilaterial, every other stroke, etc.?

It sound to me like you are breathing too early? This sounds weird but try breathing in the air from your armpit.
