i purchased pearl izumi's in january this year (first time rider and started then) and now they dont fit. when at my waist i dont even feel the pad where it should be. when i pull up the shorts to where i do feel the pad, the waist goes past my belly button. they are larges. i know i need a new pair, but i was hopin to see if anyone else here tried pearl izumi and it didnt work, what did you end up going with?

It happens...I am in between sizes for some makers.  for instance...zoot large has the problem you explained...but the mediums feel like cinchwrap.  you just have to try out different brands and sizes...it took me a year or so to find the brand combo that would hold up.  FWIW, I now enjoy the 2XU Med better than most anything out there (I'm 145-150, 5'9").

Is it possible that you have simply lost (or redistributed) weight, and now you're a different size?

My suggestion would be to go to REI or somewhere, try on a bunch of different brands & sizes; when you get something that feels good for you this week, buy a couple pairs on clearance (REI has frequent sales in-store, as well as a pretty good clearance section on its website; Sierra Trading Post, Nashbar, and even Overstock.com can all also be good places to find things on deep discount). Wait until you've been training for a while and seem to have stabilized before you buy something full price....

All my PI bike shorts (Ultrasensor) fit that way and they are the correct size for me.  I think that's how they're supposed to be.  I may be totally off on this one but every pair of bike shorts I've ever tried have been hi-rise.

Tri shorts on the other hand, generally should fit around your waist like where you wear your pants.  That's how I prefer it anyway.
